Fnac, the first European distributor of cultural material

Since 1993, when Fnac – books, music, video and audiovisual material store - opened its first shop in Madrid (Spain), Fnac has opened 9 centres. GD Convey collaborated in 2001 in the first automation of its order picking system, at its first distribution centre in Madrid.
In 2004, when they moved to a larger centre due to an increasing of the volume treated, it became a need to modify the automation system. Fnac chose for a second time GD Convey as its partner in automation technologies and handling systems. In 2006, due to an increasing of volume of sales, GD Convey is required to install a second gantry robot.

The solution carries out manual orders preparation in trays, in ergonomical picking stations. Then the trays are transported and automaticly sorted in the expeditions area. The innovation introduced is the automatic pallettising of the order trays of high density products. These trays are pallettised by two gantry robots, manufactured by GD Convey with ABB control System.

The management software for conforming varied palletising mosaics is ConveyPal, developed by GD Convey.

Results obtained by the Fnac with this new system are:
· Shipping costs reduction.
· Flexibility to carry out more orders without increasing the number of operators.
· Plant rationalization by dividing preparation and expedition area.
· Improvement of ergonomic operations and working conditions.
· Tracking of each order.
